George Stamenov (b.1988) is a Bulgarian artist and director whose practice explores the immersive possibilities of storytelling by subverting the conventions of contemporary filmmaking. Drawing from his roots in Eastern Europe, Stamenov crafts a distinctive visual language that merges digital imagery with painterly sensibilities, rendering the uncanny within seemingly mundane moments. His works examine the tension between historical aesthetics and technological mediation, reinterpreting traditional narratives through a contemporary lens.

Raised in Sofia, Bulgaria, Stamenov trained as a painter from an early age, developing an enduring fascination with the Renaissance and Medieval periods. These influences manifest in his approach to composition and lighting, where echoes of classical art intertwine with the hyperreal textures of digital media. His films, sculptures, and moving-image works often amplify subtle gestures and overlooked details, transforming fleeting occurrences into extraordinary visual experiences.

Stamenov’s artistic practice is multidisciplinary, spanning moving image, sculpture, and installation. By employing digital mediums as a central tool, he constructs immersive environments where perception is continually destabilized. His work invites the viewer into liminal spaces—between the real and the virtual, the past and the present, the banal and the sublime—challenging the boundaries of narrative and representation.

Currently based in London, Stamenov completed his postgraduate degree at the Royal College of Art. His work has been featured in notable exhibitions, including ONWARD & UPWARD – Art in the Garden of Life at Droog Gallery (2020),  BOW Arts – Visions in the Nunnery led by Patrick Goddard (December 2022),  NOT A LIVE SHOW at Bonington Gallery, Nottingham (2018), Working Projects – Inhabiting the Dome at Whiteleys Shopping Centre (2018), and . His films, sculptures, and installations continue to expand the possibilities of contemporary artistic expression, positioning him at the intersection of digital innovation and material experimentation.
